I got a call at 7:30 am this morning that my chicks arrived at the Luling Post Office. These are the Ameraucana and Ayam Cemani chicks that I bought from Charmaine Conroy at Northwoods Poultry in Wisconsin. As you can see from the video, all of the chicks arrived happy and healthy (albeit a bit weary from the trip)!

It turns out that Charmaine sent 10 Ayam Cemanis and 5 Ameraucanas. All of the Ameraucanas are of the blue variety, with the exception of one straw-colored chick. Charmaine told me that that is a Splash Ameraucana (i.e., a cross between a Black Ameraucana roo and a Blue Ameraucana hen), which apparently is pretty rare!

I couldn't be happier with the chicks I received -- thanks again, Charmaine!!

Here, I show you the four supplements that I leave out for my chickens -- calcium (for strong shells), soft rock phosphate (to metabolize excess calcium and avoid egg shell abnormalities), grit (to aid in seed digestion), and activated charcoal (to lower worm gut load, prevent coccidiosis, reduce manure smells, and increase egg production).

At the end of the video, I check my rollaway boxes again and find the first egg of the day, in pristine condition!

In this video, I show you how my chickens put themselves to bed in the evenings. After just a little bit of training, they have learned to enter the coops before the automatic doors close at dusk. The automatic doors also open at a set time in the morning, letting the chickens out. By automating this process, I have freed up a LOT of my time (and I can rest assured that my chickens are protected when I'm not home).

In the middle of the video (because I got my chickens riled up by entering the pens so late), you will see that the roosters begin aggressively mating with some of the hens. Because a rooster's main purpose is to procreate and spread its genes, they will instinctively try to mate with a hen that has just been inseminated by another rooster (which you will see on the video). This is why it is important to limit the number of roosters you place with your hens (and I definitely need to cull several of mine).

Finally, at the end of the video, you will see how I collect eggs from the rollaway boxes (and the number of eggs I typically get in a day).

I started raising my own cattle in 2014 because I realized: (1) you can make more money raising your own cattle than you can by leasing your land to others for grazing; (2) you avoid the inevitable disappointment of folks who never end up treating your property the same way you would; and (3) it is fairly easy. I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I have made on the ranch, and I have been raising a small herd of Braford cows (and one very large Angus bull) ever since.
