Dennis Banks made history in 1968 as co-founder of the American Indian Movement, begun to protect traditional way sand treaty rights of Natives.  As a leader of AIM, he was part of many brave actions, including the occupation of Alcatraz Island from 1969 to 1971, and the siege at Wounded Knee in 1973.
 
He's been a Chancellor at a Native American-led University, and had roles in feature films, including "The Last of the Mohicans," Thunderheart."
 
He's now an elder of his Anishinaabe tribe, and known also as Nowa Cumig in the Ojibwe language, which means "In the Center of the Ground."  His autobiography is called Ojibwa Warrior.  And there's a 2011 documentary about Dennis Banks, called A Good Day to Die, which Ken Burns calls "a wonderful, sorrowful, compelling film."




Dennis Banks has led many caravans and sacred runs, in the Native tradition of bringing a message of "Land, Life and Peace" from village to village.  We were spend time with Dennis, as his caravan of walkers and campers passed through on the Southern Route of the Longest Walk 3 to reverse diabetes.

In our short but unforgettable afternoon with Dennis Banks, he allowed us to film him honoring a hawk he found on the roadside, and gathering feathers.  He also shared his perspective, on the spirit of uprising, especially observations about young people then and now.
